Bujinkai Karate master John Smith visits Banbury

Banbury’s new purpose built martial arts centre ‘Fighting Fit’ held its official opening at the weekend. The two-day traditional Bujinkai Karate seminar hosted by 8th Degree black belt John Smith, saw over forty students attend. They travelled from as far a field as Plymouth for the chance to study under master Smith. John Smith who pioneered the Bujinkai Karate style in the early seventies is the countries highest ranked master, recently travelling to Japan to receive his 8th Dan grade. Master Smith has been passing on his knowledge to students for over thirty years, none more so than Bujinkai chief instructor and Fighting Fit’s owner 5th Dan black belt John Shiels. John said, “I have been a student for many years and it’s a great honour to have master Smith here to officially open the centre. His experience and knowledge has helped me develop myself not just as a martial artist but as an individual as well”. John Shiels was the youngest person in Ireland to be awarded a first-degree black belt, and went on to compete internationally as a member of the Great Britain Karate team for 8 years. John is also the current British kickboxing champion. John Shiels said, “ The seminar was a fantastic success. We had advanced students and Dan grades from all over the country and all ages attend, as well as many of our instructors like 5th Degree black belt Niki Stewart. Its been great to be able to host it here at Fighting Fit as I have invested a lot to try and be able to offer the facilities needed for events such as this, myself and master John Smith are already looking forward to the next one”.
